Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Zeiselmair

Andreas Zeiselmair is a professor of Digital Energy Transition at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT). In his field of expertise, “Information Systems and Management in the Energy Sector,” he focuses on various digitalization topics within the energy industry. Key areas of focus include flexibility development and marketing, optimization, smart metering, and the digitalization of grid infrastructure.

Teaching
A wide range of courses in the fields of IT/digitalization in the energy industry, energy management, optimization, energy storage, and unlocking flexibility are offered alongside foundational subjects in the degree programs Bachelor of Renewable Energy Management, Master of Business Management and Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy, and Bachelor of Climate Protection and Climate Adaptation. Interactive formats, hands-on assignments, and projects play a key role in the teaching approach.

Research
Current research projects in the department cover all areas of the digital energy transition:

SkIES
Development of innovative approaches for implementing energy sharing in field trials, in order to test a functional overall solution for the scalable integration of energy sharing into the German energy system.

smartBattery
AI-based site selection and operational optimization of large-scale battery storage systems to ensure grid stability and potentially reduce the need for grid expansion.

SysMMO
The SysMMO project aims to develop and test innovative marketing strategies for large-scale heat pumps in district heating networks. The focus is on a multi-market optimization (MMO) that operates these systems in a way that serves the needs of the overall system, the market, and the grid.

International Collaboration
Initiated by Andreas Zeiselmair and the International Knowledge Exchange Association, in 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding was successfully signed between HSWT and Arusha Technical College (ATC), Tanzania. Based on several projects with ATC (also involving Markus Heinsdorff), this agreement outlines cooperation through the exchange of students for study and/or internship semesters and academic staff. Further objectives include joint research activities, publications, and the exchange of scientific materials and other information.

Art-Science Collaboration
Following many years of collaboration with artist Markus Heinsdorff, the Designing Energy cooperation was established in 2025, under which a workshop has already been held. Further formats are already in planning.

Markus Heinsdorff

Markus Heinsdorff – born in 1954 and studied sculpture in Munich. Nature and space are the central themes of the artist, who incorporates fields such as architecture and photography into his work. He has initiated and designed projects, installations and exhibitions in China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Indonesia (Java and Bali), Vietnam, the USA, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru and numerous European countries. In most countries Heinsdorff develops projects for the exhibition venues with materials from their surroundings. He has received several awards.

In 2015 he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande. His works have been supported by the Siemens Arts Programme, the Siemens “Empowering People Award”, UNESCO-Aschberg Bursary, the Goethe Institutes in China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the USA, Hungary and the Bavarian State Ministry. For the presentation of Germany in India from 2011 to 2013, Heinsdorff developed and realised 16 pavilions as art structures for the German Federal Foreign Office. For Germany’s presentation in China, he designed and realised the German-Chinese House at EXPO Shanghai 2010 and 21 pavilions as object buildings from 2007 to 2009. In both countries there were accompanying exhibitions, installations and workshops.

He was a visiting professor in China at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, the University of Science and Technology (2009 – 2012), the Faculties of Architecture at the University of Chongqing (2008 – 2010), the School of Architecture, Southeast University Nanjing (2007 – 2010), and the DeTao Academy in Shanghai (2014). In 2017, he founded an experimental space laboratory together with the EBB Chair, Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University, Munich.

The Academy of Art + Architecture for Climate, Environment, and Social Issues is a collaborative project between the City of Burghausen, its cultural institutions (Haus der Fotografie, Kunsthalle Studienkirche St. Josef, directed by Ines Auerbach, co-curator of the Academy), and Markus Heinsdorff, founder of the Academy.
